In this talk, we discuss container integration with OpenDaylight (ODL) on both bare-metal and OpenStack. Topics include the current state of integration, future use cases and what gaps are present that prevents us from implementing those use cases now.

Significant Container and VM orchestration and SDN integration gaps exist impacting:
  • Network performance
  • Resource utilisation
  • Leveraging of existing SDN/NFV infrastructure
In respect to networking, we propose the following:
  • In all cases, support libnetwork, and CNI APIs
  • Bare-metal container integration with ODL
  • Using OpenStack Kuryr to network bare-metal containers on OpenStack
  • Using OpenStack Kuryr to network containers in a VM using VLAN trunking

Typical use cases to be covered include containers connecting with ODL, containers running in a VM provisioned by an IaaS software stack and containers for VNFs.

Frederick Kautz

Frederick Kautz is a Principal Software Engineer in the Office of Technology at Red Hat where he focuses on improving the overall state of container networking and container+SDN integration. His past experiences include building big data pipelines, complex continuous integration systems, scale-out storage, and early community contributions to Docker.
