Today's networks carry many different services and applications. For example, service provider customers with time-sensitive financial trading applications need short-delay paths that may need to be segregated from other customers. Residential customers consuming over-the-top (OTT) services like Netflix and YouTube have video quality requirements that if not met may lead to dissatisfaction and churn. To accommodate different service types like these, as well as variable demands and failure conditions, the ability to provision software-defined network resources dynamically enables operators to minimize over-provisioning of network resources and better control capex outlays. This presentation will explore the critical elements for SDN management and orchestration in multi-service networks, plus new protocols and OpenDaylight developments that enable end-to-end service overlays in the WAN.
